Why you & your family should be eating organic

The farmer image may be stereotypical, but it provokes thought. What am I eating? What you’ll find is alarming.

There is some scary stuff out there that many people aren’t even aware of. Unnecessary chemicals exist in the foods we eat on a daily basis.

At Green Planet, we care about the health and well-informed decisions of our customers. In order to aid this goal we’ve compiled a brief summary of benefits towards eating organic foods, and the dangers associated with non-organic foods. We hope it encourages you to do some research of your own and be actively conscious of your food decisions.

 1) Non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms)

GMO’s are plants and animals that were created using DNA cloning technology. This experimental genetic engineering merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Are you curious as to the foods that contain these experimental ingredients? Check out this list. As overwhelming as it is, this list is not complete.

On an interesting note, there are currently 64 countries that completely or substantially ban GM foods. Why are GMO’s safe and acceptable for the U.S.? Is there something our society is missing?

 2) Better taste, better quality

Research has shown that organic produce contains higher levels of antioxidants & vitamin C, as well as the minerals calcium, iron, chromium, and magnesium. Fruits and vegetables taste much more vibrant and strong if they are grown organically compared to processed and chemically tainted food. Yet another benefit of healthy organic foods!

 3) Support local farms

According to the Organic Farming Research Foundation, as of 2007 there are approximately 13,000 certified organic producers in the U.S.. Compared to about 3,000 tracked in 1994. This tiny organic market is just a sliver of the estimated the two million farms in the U.S. today. Family farms that are certified organic are profitable and they farm in harmony with their surrounding environment. Help ensure the success of your local economy and organic food production by local farmers.

 4) Earth-friendly & sustainable

Organic farming practices keep the soil rich for future agriculture and doesn’t pollute our water supply. Wildlife and insects are also able to play their part in the ecosystem without chemical interference. Compare that to modern agricultural practices that are destructive to the environment through the widespread use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers. These procedures have resulted in drastic environmental damage in many parts of the world.

 5) No artificial ingredients or preservatives

There’s no sense ruining what our planet provides by adding artificial flavors. You can be sure no chemical concoctions or flavoring are added to organic food. Just one artificial flavor can contain hundreds of chemicals. Consuming these flavorings can lead to hyperactivity and allergic reactions.

If it can go bad, it’s good for you. If it stays good, it’s bad for you. Foods that last forever are loaded with artificial preservatives. These can cause issues such as allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhea, and even DNA damage.

At Green Planet we know where our food comes from, and we gladly share with whomever asks.

Know your food.
